Starr Piano Building

TODAY

Experience unrivaled luxury at The Starr Piano Building, offering sophisticated suites within a storied Nashville setting.

In a nod to the Starr Piano Building's rich heritage, we were inspired by a musical symbol, the segno or “𝄋”. On sheet music, it tells a performer to return to a section and continue. The conept proved fitting for the Starr Piano Building, now a luxury haven in Music City where guests will want to return again and again.

To honor this connection, we customized the segno with two stars—a direct reference to the building's name—and enclosed it within a shield, preserving its history for years to come.

THE HISTORY

  • 1889-1890

This building was originally constructed as the grand showroom for the Jesse French Piano & Organ Company. Its ornate Queen Anne architecture and sheet-metal façade made it a standout in downtown Nashville—housing over 200 pianos and organs at a time.

  • 1897

The Starr Piano Company took over when Jesse French’s brother-in-law, Henry Gennett, acquired the business. From here, Starr helped spread music throughout the South, making the building a regional hub for instruments and sound.

  • Early 1900s

As phonographs revolutionized how people experienced music, the Starr Piano Building became Nashville’s first record and phonograph shop. Some of the earliest recordings by legends like Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, and Charley Patton were sold right here.

  • 1920s-1990s

After the music faded, the building adapted to changing times—housing everything from clothing stores to beauty salons. Its elegant bones remained, but its original purpose quietly slipped into the background.

  • 2023-2024

The building underwent a full restoration—preserving its historic façade while transforming the interior into four luxury vacation suites. The design honors its musical past with curated artwork, antique details, and thoughtful nods to its piano showroom origins.

  • 2025

Reintroduced as Starr Piano Suites, the building now welcomes guests from around the world. It’s more than a place to stay—it’s a stay inside a living piece of Nashville’s musical history.
